Digital Learning-Thursday, April 30th

We are having fun the the letter Qq and the /kw/ sound this week. Name the objects in the picture that begin with the /kw/ sound. Have you ever eaten a quesadilla? They are quite delicioso!

Let's read a story about Quinn the cat. As you read the story pages, notice the words that make the /kw/ sound that begin with the letter Q.

Quickly read the words in the chart three times. Read the words across the page, or start and the top and read down in a row.

We had fun learning more about the letter Qq this week. Have a quiet and peaceful weekend!

Digital Learning-Wednesday, April 29th

It is a wonderful Wednesday and we are continuing our letter sound practice for the letter Qq. Read the words below. Tap out each sound, then blend to read the word. Remember that the letters qu make one sound, /kw/.

Let's listen to a story about a lonely duck. His name is Quackenstein, which begins with the sound/kw/. All the animals in the zoo have families to love. All of them, except Quackenstein. Lonely and sad, he decides to adopt an egg. He cares for it, waiting until the moment when it will hatch a baby duck of his own. On a dark and stormy night, the egg hatches, but wait—what’s this? That baby’s not a duck! Click the link to find out what Quackenstein does next.

Our sight word for this week is see. Quack the Duck is looking at boots with his dad. Do you see the word see in the story sentence?

What color boots would you pick? We will read more about Quack the Duck in our Zoom meeting this week.

Digital Learning-Tuesday, April 28th

Today we are naming objects and reading words that begin with the /kw/ sound for the letter Qq.

The Zoo-phonics animal that makes the sound for the letter Q is Queeny Quail. You can make the signal for Queeny by placing your bent index finger forward at the top of your forehead, while saying the letter sound /q/ (kw). We use our finger to make the feather on top of Queeny's head.

What facts do you know about a quail? Quails are small, plump birds with brown to bluish-gray feathers. A plume on the tops of their heads bob as they walk. The eat seeds, berries, and flowers.
Click the red link to find out more about this special bird. Facts About Quails

Look at the picture below. Name the objects that begin with the /kw/ sound.
Hint: there are a total of 9.

Do you ask a lot of questions? We hope you do because that is how we learn about things. When you have a question, you use asking words. Try using the asking words from the chart to ask a question about Mr. Q. What are you wondering about him?

Take a look at our poetry poster and count the number of words with the letter Qq. Why did the queen want the birds to be quiet?

Time for a nap! You might want to take a nap today too. We will see you back here tomorrow!

While much of the world sleeps, vampire bats emerge from dark caves, mines, tree hollows, and abandoned buildings in Mexico and Central and South America. If you want to learn more about vampire bats, check out this National Geographic link for kids:

Now we are going to listen for the first sound we hear in words. Say the name of the picture and listen for the beginning sound. Can you match the pictures that have the same first sound? I hear /v/ in van, and /v/ in vase. Now you try.

We are proud of you for practicing your letter sounds this week. Tomorrow is fun Friday, so enjoy your day and we will see you back next week with a new letter friend!

Ask your parents to help you with a letter V activity. You will need newspaper food advertisements with pictures of vegetables, and glue. This activity will help you practice your cutting skills. It is a great opportunity to talk about what is a vegetable and what is not.

Here's what your project might look like:

We will see you tomorrow with more fun lessons about letter sounds!

Digital Learning Day 19-April 16th

Hello Smyrna Stars! Can you find the letter Y in the alphabet chart? Count the letters and stop on Y. It is the 25th letter in the alphabet. It comes after X and before Z.

Let's read words with the /y/ sound. Look at the picture of the yo-yo. It begins with a /y/. Read the words that have the same beginning sound as yo-yo.

Quickly read this word chart. Try reading the words going across, then up and down. Read it three times. Did you get faster each time?

The sight word for this week is:
Here's a song to help you remember how the word is spelled:

Use your finger to circle the letters in the word below. Trace it with your finger, then practice writing the word yes in the air.

You finished another great week of review and practice, yes you did! Remember, Friday is a day to have fun! Check out Ms. Leslie, Ms. Lane, or Coach Berie's blogs on our school website for fun music, art, and P.E. activities.

Digital Learning Day 18: April 15th

Today we are learning how to use the /y/ sound when we read words. Read the passage below and look for words that begin with the letter Y. If you have trouble with a word, arm tap each sound, then blend it together to read the word.

One of our favorite stories with the letter Y is Yo! Yes! by Chris Raschka. Click the red link below to listen to the story. You might know the words in this book, so you can read along too!

Did you notice all of the excitement, or exclamation marks, in this book? Authors use these marks (!) when they want us to change our voices and read with excitement. Try saying Yo! with excitement. Yo is a way of greeting a friend, like saying "hello!"

Yo! We will see you tomorrow with more fun activities to try. Yes!

Digital Learning Day 17: April 14th

Yesterday, you were introduced to the letter Y with Ms. Y's yellow yarn. Today's lesson will focus on the letter Yy and the /y/ sound we hear at the beginning of words. Our Zoo animal that will help us remember this letter sound is Yancy Yak. To give his signal, form a “y-shape” by extending your thumb and little finger. Place your thumb next to your ear and your little finger next to your mouth, as though you were holding a telephone and “yakking.” While signaling, say the letter sound /y/. Note: Make sure you don’t say “yak, yak, yak,” instead of the sound /y/.
Did you know that most yaks live on farms?  There are a few wild Yak but they are in danger of extinction. There may be as few as 100 Yak left in the wild. All yaks have horns that form the shape of the letter Y, like the picture of Yancy.
Yaks in India, saddled for riding.

Search for objects in the picture that begin with the /y/ sound. Hint: there are a total of 6.

Can you read this sight word? Yes, you can!
You can practice writing the word yes at home. Trace over the letters 3 times with different colors. Try using the word yes in a sentence. Here's an example: Yes, I do like to read.

Tomorrow, we will look read a book about Yip and Yap. See you soon!

Digital Learning Day 16: April 13th

Let's be letter detectives and search the poem, Yellow, for words with the /y/ sound.

In the poem, the boy's sweater is made of yellow yarn. Look around your house or outside and play, " I Spy Something Yellow."

Thanks for playing, we will see you tomorrow with more letter Y activities!

Digital Learning Day 15

It's a fantastic Friday! We are going to review the 2 letters from our lessons this week. Jerry Jellyfish and Kayo Kangaroo are the Zoo animal sounds and signals. Can you stand up and show the signals for each animal?

Check out this cool link to the Georgia Aquarium's Jellyfish webcam. You might even see Jerry Jellyfish floating around!   Jellyfish Webcam

Practice reading the words on this chart as quickly as you can. Read it three times. Did you notice that each time you try, you read a little faster?

Here is a great story you can listen to with our special letter of the week, K. Do you see the word in the title that begins with a K? After you listen to the story, remember that anytime the world seems a little scary, we love you just like Chester's mom loved him!
Click the link below to listen:

Digital Learning Day 14

Hi Friends, let's continue our review of the letter K and the /k/ sound.

Name the objects in the picture that begin with the /k/ sound. Hint: There are 9.
What other words can you think of that begin with the /k/ sound?

Let's read the decodable book pages from the story Kit and Kim. If you are having trouble reading the words that begin with K, tap out each sound, then blend the sounds together to read the word.

Can you find the letter K on the alphabet chart? Name each letter and picture across the chart. Now, count the letters to see which number K is in the list. Did you say number 11? Yes, K is the eleventh letter in the alphabet.

Great practice today! Don't forget to be a letter detective and search your kitchen for the letter K later. We hope you have a thumbs up Thursday!
